Betony (Betonica officinalis was Stachys officinalis) (17/07/2022) Woods Mill Nature Reserve, Small Dole, Henfield, W Sussex (just into the reserve from the main Henfield Road). Not a very good photo, but you can see one of the distinguishing features - these lower three-lobed petals with the side lobes weing narrower and shorter than the rather raggedy middle one. This is quite a pale version.
Betony (Betonica officinalis was Stachys officinalis) (18/07/2023) Woods Mill Nature Reserve, Small Dole, Henfield, W Sussex (just into the reserve from the main Henfield Road). Flowers are in a short spike and with these very characteristic leaves. Sometimes the flower spike can be longer.
Betony (Betonica officinalis was Stachys officinalis) (17/07/2022) Woods Mill Nature Reserve, Small Dole, Henfield, W Sussex (just into the reserve from the main Henfield Road). This specimen has paler flowers than would be expected - perhaps because it is in woodland. The darker specimens in other photos are more usual - they are in full sun.
Betony (Betonica officinalis was Stachys officinalis) (17/07/2022) Woods Mill Nature Reserve, Small Dole, Henfield, W Sussex (just into the reserve from the main Henfield Road). Unmistakable given these leaves. My hand shows that these flowers are quite small.
Betony (Betonica officinalis was Stachys officinalis) (17/07/2022) Woods Mill Nature Reserve, Small Dole, Henfield, W Sussex (in the small field leading to the field with the owl box in it). A longer than usual flower spike and with darker pink flowers(maybe because this specimen is in full sun?). It is def still Betony though because of the shape of the leaf below the flower spike here.

Betony (Betonica officinalis was Stachys officinalis) (18/07/2023) Woods Mill Nature Reserve, Small Dole, Henfield, W Sussex (just into the reserve from the main Henfield Road). Anthers in the top two - books say 4 anthers but there are two blobs below - not sure if the stigma. The bottom two flowers no idea what the red things are as they don't look like the anthers in the top two flowers.
